1.  How do I check to see if a domain name is available?
Once you have a name in mind you should do what is called a "whois" search.  There are several sites that will do that for you or you can do it right here.

If you wish contact us.  Tell us what you want and we will check for you on the availability of your desired name.    Contact Us

After you know your name is available,  remember to come back here to register on Anchor WebHost.

.us and .name are priced higher. See price listing.

Alternative domains extensions

Introducing New.Net!
Targeted Domain Names

Anchor WebHost is pleased to offer, in partnership with New.Net, new extensions for domain names that offer business-specific customization and greater relevance than current traditional web site addresses ending in existing top-level domains.

These alternate domains more clearly promote the products or services your company delivers. Through the use of targeted domain extensions such as .shop, .club, .travel, etc, your website address now offers the opportunity for more targeted messaging to potential customers.

These domain extensions are accessible by people that use one of many New.net partner ISPs to access the Internet or who activate their browsers with the New.net plu.  Because a few extensions do not meet the policy of Anchor WebHost, they are not listed and will not be registered by Anchor WebHost.

 .AGENT  .ARTS  .AUCTION  .CHAT  .CHURCH
 .CLUB  .FAMILY  .FREE  .GAME  .GOLF
 .INC  .KID  .LAW  .LTD  .LLP
 .TRAVEL  .LTD  .MED  .TECH  .SCHOOL
 .SCIFI  .SHOP  .SOC  .SPORT  .MP3

NOTE: Currently not all ISPs support the new extensions. Anchor WebHost is  accepting registration of the New.net extensions.  Be aware right now they are not fully supported by all ISPs.  These new domains extensions are accessible to over 174,661,619 million users worldwide, and that number is growing everyday.

New.net is a company that sells domains in alternate top-level domains not supported in the official DNS system

Let me list some things you need to be aware of:

1. These domains are not what we call Top Level Domains (TLD).
These extensions are not -- like the veteran .com, .net, or .org Extensions -- approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Rather, new.net uses routing software to divert Web surfers who type in the new domain and switches them to a New.net server.

So, for example, visitors to a Web site called buyme.store would actually be diverted to buyme.store.new.net. The routing software can be provided through an ISP, or downloaded by individual users via the New.net site.
Earthlink is compatible with New.net domains without any software being installed on the user's computer

This would mean that your ISP or the person wishing to see your site would have to download and install the new.net software to view your pages. While your ISP may provide this the viewing client must also have this routing software installed. This could cause your page not to be seen.

2. The extensions are targeted toward Europe but making their way to the USA slowly.

3. The DNS could run into conflict if ICANN decides to release one of its own extensions (such as .family .church etc) as a new top-level domain. Right now that is a major concern among the Registrars in the industry. As of now the industry is working to resolve the domain conflicts should they occur.

4. New.net distributes NewDotNet, an Internet Explorer plugin for Windows that enables the browser to access sites that use these unofficial domain names. It is commonly considered adware. Thus blocked by many anti spy ware systems.

5. There can also be e-mail problems.

These extensions are priced higher.

 5.   Who owns a registered domain name?

Technically, no one owns a domain name. Domain names are not owned they are leased and remain with the initial lessee until the name is deleted or the lessee fails to renew the name.  By paying the domain registration fee, you license the rights to use that unique domain name throughout the world for a specific time.

Should you ever cancel your Anchor WebHost  hosting account, you will still own the rights for that domain name, for as long as you continue to pay the registration fees.

If your name is the same as or confusingly similar to a trademarked name then a challenged may be issued for that name

Although the registrant is considered the lessee, the Administrative contact has the authority to update, transfer, renew, delete or change ownership of a domain name. So the registrant should choose the Administrative contact wisely and keep their contact information current as they have control of the name.  If you register with Anchor WebHost  than Anchor WebHost will be the Technical Contact.

 9.   When will my domain name be on the World Wide Web?
When registering a domain name with Anchor WebHost, the name is  processed through the ICANN database. The process can take up to 48 hours to fully take effect and appear when performing a whois query.

Even though the name doesn’t display on a whois query immediately,  it’s reserved for the registrant of the domain name and is unable to be registered by anyone else.

After these steps, it is up to the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the world to update their DNS to recognize your domain name. Most major ISPs, such as Earthlink and AOL, update their DNS several times each day. However, smaller ISPs may update their DNS less frequently. Therefore, most of the world will recognize your domain name within a few days, but it may take up to a week for the entire Internet community to access your domain name.

You may transfer your domain name to Anchor WebHost at any time.  Simply use the transfer form. You can transfer any domain from any registrar in the world for free. We even provide you with transfer instructions for the most common registrars.  We will honor any time period you have left before transfer by adding it to the time (usually one year) of your registry to Anchor WebHost.  For example:

You choose to transfer a name to Anchor WebHost which has say, 10 months before it expires.  When you transfer to Anchor WebHost,  the 10 months will added to the term of  your registration with Anchor WebHost.  If you choose a one year term the you will be charged $20.00 for a year AND the 10 months will be added.  So you will get 22 months before your name is due for renewal.

12.   Can I register a domain name and NOT have a website?
Yes.  You can secure a domain name and just park it until you are ready to put up your web site.  You do not need a URL to have a domain name but you need a domain name to have a URL.  Many just register the name they want while it is still available.  That assures they have the name they want until they are ready to "go on the web".

When Anchor WebHost process your request it becomes real-time,  interfacing  with the VeriSign Global Registry Services (formerly Network Solutions, Inc.).  Please be sure  the name you register is the name you want.  It can not be changed or cancelled.  This is really beyond the control of Anchor WebHost. We provide domain name registration as a convenience and for a discount, we have no control to refund once the name is registered.
